The Szyk Haggadah

The Publisher, Irvin Ungar, Holds the Deluxe and Premier Editions of the Szyk Haggadah.The luxury limited edition of The Szyk Haggadah is exquisite in every detail. The rich, royal blue leather and deep red cloth of the bindings are custom dyed to match the vibrant colors of Szyk’s paintings, reproduced here with state-of-the-art inkjet printing on the finest Bugra paper by Hahnemühle.

The Szyk Haggadah has 96 pages but is bound as if it were 192 pages: printed on only one side of the sheet, each leaf is actually two, folded at the fore-edge. The custom handmade paste papers are painted a vivid blue with red highlights. (The paste papers of the Premier Edition are enhanced with 24 carat gold flecks.) Measures 9.35 inches (23.7 cm) x 11 inches (27.9 cm) overall.

The Deluxe Edition is limited to 215 copies. The Premier Edition is limited to 85 copies.

Freedom Illuminated: Understanding The Szyk Haggadah.Freedom Illuminated: Understanding The Szyk Haggadah (Historicana, 2008) is the official companion volume to The Szyk Haggadah. The book is hand-cased in the traditional way in beautiful blue Tsumugi silk cloth from Japan, and stamped in gilt on the spine and front cover.

The volume includes three original scholarly essays by noted curator Tom Freudenheim, Professor Shalom Sabar of Hebrew University, and renowned Szyk authority Irvin Ungar. Freedom Illuminated is profusely illustrated in full color, with extensive appendices. 248 pages. Measures 9.35 inches (23.7 cm) x 11 inches (27.9 cm).

Documentary Film in Handpainted Paste Paper Envelope.The artisan production of The Szyk Haggadah was captured in the original documentary film, “In Every Generation: Remaking The Szyk Haggadah,” directed by Emmy-nominated James Ruxin. Each copy of The Szyk Haggadah includes an official DVD of the film enclosed in a hand-painted wrapper that matches the paste papers of The Szyk Haggadah. Custom Clamshell Box, Shown with the Deluxe Edition.The magnificent, handmade clamshell box housing The Szyk Haggadah is quarter leather and slubbed silk-rayon cloth, a perfect match to the binding of The Szyk Haggadah. The spine of the box is stamped in gold leaf and features an inset leather label on the front.

Portfolio Suite of 12 Prints from the Szyk Haggadah, in Custom Fabric-covered Compartment.The Premier Edition includes an exclusive suite of twelve hand-numbered and hand-embossed Szyk prints in a special four-flap portfolio compartment. Like the pages of The Szyk Haggadah, these exclusive prints are inkjet on the finest Hahnemühle paper.

While ten of the images were chosen from The Szyk Haggadah itself, two others are never-before-published, alternate dedication pages for The Szyk Haggadah that Szyk created during his international search for a publisher. One page is dedicated to the Jews of Łvóv, with Polish and Yiddish text, and the other is dedicated to the Jews of Austria and Germany, written solely in Hebrew. Each is splendidly illustrated in Szyk’s highest style.
