Two Down and One to Go
EPHEMERA. Washington DC, 1945. US War Department pamphlet mocks Axis leaders.
This War Department Pamphlet No. 21-31 features a front cover illustration of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. Published for the War Department by the U.S. government printing office (curiously) on 28 April 1945, though V-E Day (May 8) was still days away.
Szyk was recognized as a generous contributor of art for use by the US War Department, and particularly with regard to the selling of US War Bonds. This particular illustration also appeared in other printed media without the faces of Hitler and Mussolini being crossed out. It also appeared in wartime propaganda film, “Two Down and One to Go”, directed by Frank Capra (watch the video here).
Two Down and One to Go. Washington DC: US War Department, 1945. Pamphlet measures: 5 1/4 inches x 4 1/4 inches . Fine condition.
