The 1939–1940 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadow, New York, was the largest of all time, attracting more than 44 million visitors. The national pavilions offered the numerous participating countries — including the USSR, Great Britain, and Czechoslovakia — to show off their latest technological and artistic triumphs. (Germany declined to attend the Fair.)

The architecture of the pavilions themselves had a great influence on the field of design. These stamps include the Palestine Pavilion and the Polish Pavilion, the latter of which displayed precious art and objects while the Nazis were invading and occupying Poland itself.
